Steely Dan
Situated on the edge of an existing 1990s housing development, with a prime example of a late 1950s Basel tram stop on the west side of the site and on the border to France. The site offered many challenges for a socially focused housing with an emphasis on sustainability and on an economical budget. The proposal compliments the surrounding volumes and sympathetically adds to the existing neighborhood while bringing a new character. The large steel access balconies to the street come together in a large communal balcony moment to address the tram stop and celebrate living together. The hybrid concrete and timber construction uses concrete only where absolutely necessary with standard pre-fabricated timber elements bringing a rationale structure and space division.
