The Red, The Blue and The Dark

Located in a prominent position in the historic centre of Luzern, the open competition called for a large reworkings of the existing theatre infrastructure and new facilities. The proposed new building keeps a low and horizontal volume to the Reuss river and surrounding context with a side stage cantilevering over the esplanade marking the entrance to the theatre. The complete side stage is covered in LED’s with a nod to the old iconic theatre entrances, showcasing the latest and upcoming shows to the city. William Turner according to historic account, painted the “The Blue Rigi” from exactly the same position as the theatre sits today, as a result the metal facade is perforated to give an abstracted version of the painting to the city.
